Saxophonists Andy Schofield and Jo McCallum have created a dynamic new 17 piece jazz orchestra. The line-up unites established artists with the finest of the region's young emerging talent, as they storm through a selection of original works by North West composers and arrangers.

Their new project for 2010, supported by Arts Council England profiles two national guitar greats, Mike Walker (Jacqui Dankworth, Mike Gibbs, etc.) and Stuart McCallum (Cinematic Orchestra, Don Weller, etc.). The music of these artists has been arranged for the jazz orchestra with guest appearances from these incredible musicians.

This collaboration between the great French jazz trumpeter Erik Truffaz and the extraordinary funk/soul/blues beatbox stylings of Simple Spirit's vocalist Sly Johnson has thrilled audiences across the world.

Erik Truffaz mines the world to create his unique form of jazz - the so-called 'European sounds' are really the sounds of the global village in the digital age. Fusing these world, electronic and ambient influences with an ongoing love for the music of Miles Davis and an incredible minimalist style, has led to a sound that is all his own and exemplified beautifully in this wonderful partnership with Sly Johnson (aka The Mic Buddah/The Beatboxologist) - a member of the acclaimed French rap collective Saian Supa Crew.
Band on the Wall is now delighted to bring this sensational duo to its Manchester stage.

The internationally-acclaimed collaboration featuring two of the world's greatest blues slide guitarists performing together on our Manchester stage. A sensational night of pure and blissful music in the company of two major forces in the history of the blues.

Louisiana Red was born in Alabama in 1932, and is one of the last great bluesmen still performing, who earned his place in the blues via the harsh realities of life and who learned his craft from the fathers and grandfathers of the blues; Son House, Elmore James, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Arthur Crudup, Robert Nighthawk, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker.

When Louisiana Red performs, the songs are often only a launch pad for expressing his immediate feelings, in the almost lost tradition of spontaneous composition that goes back to the original Delta Blues artists and even further to the West-African griots. From the old acoustic Delta sounds of Robert Johnson, all the way to the urban electric Chicago style of his mentor Muddy Waters, Louisiana Red’s great versatility shines.

Michael Messer was born in Middlesex in 1956, and is recognised as one of the leading slide guitarists and blues innovators around the world. His playing encompasses the entire history of the blues, but is uniquely contemporary and highly individual. Being an English bluesman with an international reputation for slide guitar is a rarity in itself and Messer’s obsessive appetite for knowledge of his art is virtually unrivalled. The American magazine, Spirit listed Michael as one of the greatest slide guitarists ever alongside Duane Allman and Ry Cooder.

This choreography has developed out of a ten-week course in contemporary dance technique and creative movement. The starting point for this course was a metronome (a device to mark time) and the concept of time. Movement material has been manipulated in response to time, and time has played a part in creating the choreography. This unique work has been choreographed by Ruth Tyson-Jones and the participants.

When it comes to heartfelt emotion, no one can match the genius Tchaikovsky. Join us for his soaring violin concerto and music from the Sleeping Beauty ballet.

here should be every reason to think of Tchaikovsky as out of touch – he was an aloof personality, full of insecurities – and yet his music cuts to the core with the irresistible impulse of honest emotion.

You can’t help but feel his astonishing gift for melody and great dramatic instincts. In this concert we celebrate his genius with the soaring themes and infectious virtuosity of the Violin Concerto and music from his ballet masterpiece, Sleeping Beauty.

Following the 2008 Elgar festival, Vladimir Ashkenazy has invited Canadian James Ehnes, “a tremendous violinist”, to return to play another great Romantic concerto.

Discover the genius of Bernstein on stage and in the concert hall with music from Candide and West Side Story, and his Age of Anxiety symphony.

For most of us, Leonard Bernstein’s genius lives on the stage – in the dazzling optimism of his music for Candide and the urban cool of West Side Story. But there’s another side to Lenny: the “serious” composer who wanted to write the Great American Symphony. So how did he go? The Age of Anxiety gives a clue: it’s called a symphony but it looks like a piano concerto and its narrative structure is set by Auden’s poem.

This is a symphony that encompasses a quest for identity and the glitter of the jazz age. Lenny was no ordinary musician, and in this concert David Robertson gives us the best of all possible Bernstein.
