It is not without good reason that Prague’s have included the "city of a hundred spires" and "the golden city" being famed for its magnificent range of outstanding architecture from Gothic, Baroque and Romanesque to the modern style Belle-Époque/Art Nouveau and Cubism.

The Prague State Opera was formally known as the New German Theatre. It was built in 1888 and continues to maintain its rich artistic tradition. The repertoire features popular operas by W. A. Mozart, G. Verdi, G. Puccini and G. Bizet as well as ballets from the classical repertoire. The National Theatre is one of the most important Czech cultural institutions. Originally built with funds collected from the Czech people over a 40 year period, the building opened in 1881. Disaster struck after only 11 performances when a fire destroyed a large part of the building, an event deemed as a national catastrophe. Within 47 days funds were raised to recreate the buildings brilliance and the second theatre opened in 1883 with a performance of Smetana's opera Libuše, written especially for the occasion.
