“Life is not like a novel,” states a phrase in Eugene Onegin, but this opera actually mirrors a tragic event in Tchaikovsky’s own life. The poignant “Letter Scene” is sung by the sensational Renée Fleming in the role of Tatiana for the first time at The Met. Charismatic Dmitri Hvorostovsky sings the title role with the dynamic Ramón Vargas as Lenski. Valery Gergiev conducts.

Major refurbishment has since been undertaken to restore the sumptuousness of the Palais, a style that was typical of the Second Empire. Le Groupe de la Danse de Carpeaux, the marble Grand Staircase, the red and gold auditorium, the ceiling by Chagall and an 8 tonne crystal chandelier – all these components are all designed for a heightened appreciation of performance and illusion. Home to the world famous Ballet de l'Opera, Opéra Garnier presents an extensive repertoire of contemporary music and dance in addition to the popular classical pieces.
