Salzburg Salzburg is located on the Salzach River. It’s most noteworthy buildings are a late 7th-century Benedictine abbey, which was for many years the centre of missionary activities; the Franciscan church, consecrated in 1223 and the early 17th-century cathedral, modelled on St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Salzburg’s most distinguished son, W.A Mozart, met with scant recognition in the city during his time there, but part of the house where he was born is now a museum, and a commemorative statue was erected in his honour on Mozart Platz, a quaint little square. The LandestheaterThe Landestheater was opened on October 1st, 1893, with a performance of Mozart's opera Titus. The building was originally richly decorated with Rococo ornamentation. In 1938/39 the front part of the house was rebuilt; and the theatre gained a much-needed main foyer and a revolving stage. A second major renovation in 1977/78 provided further technical improvements and the theatre is now used for opera as well as theatre performances. In 2006, The Landestheater will hold performances of two of Mozart's finest operas La Finta Giardiniera (16 performances between March and May) and The Magic Flute (20 performances between September and December).
